NATIVE PLANT PROJECT GARDENS
The club maintains four separate garden areas at the Highland Library and adjoining Hillcrest Recreation Center. These gardens, developed through a grant, consist of perennial flowers, grasses, shrubs and trees native to Minnesota. The gardens were designed by a nationally known expert in native plants and planted by volunteers from the GCRC. One garden area is maintained as a small prairie, another features woodland plants in a natural setting, and the other areas showcase a number of species of plants in attractively designed small plots so individual types can be readily identified and studied. The gardens occasionally serve as a teaching resource for classes and workshops on native plants. Garden club volunteers clean up the gardens in spring and fall and maintain them throughout the summer.
